This position is responsible for the efficient operations of SXFN elementary, secondary, post-secondary education, training and skills development and is an advocate for education in the community. Possessing excellent communication and management skills, the Senior Education Manager builds effective working relationships with community groups, funding agencies and other external contacts, and has a clear, results oriented focus on positive educational outcomes.Duties and Responsibilities:Program Management: Develops an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives for programs and services aligned with the strategic direction, including program delivery and evaluation. Provides oversight and the delivery of various educational programs such as the Elementary/Secondary and Post Secondary education programs, Post Secondary Program and evaluates these programs. Creating an on-going relationship with educational organizations such as FNESC, FNSA,TEA, RSES School District # 27 &74,and other partners to ensure that students are receiving high quality education. Conducts needs assessments, identifies learning gaps, and provides leadership to develop plans and priorities in creating programs to address the learning requirements of the organization and community that improve learning outcomes. Manages the local education agreements between SXFN and School District #27. Liaises with education institutions to advocate for students to have access to all program information. Provides direction of counseling services related to further educational goals and plans. Creates a safe and healthy environment for students, employees and staff. Participates in various education council and committee meetings (i.e. FNEC, FNESC, Skills Development Working Group) and as well as CCATEC. Recognizes educational achievements of community members and works with school principal to coordinate events celebrating successes. Identifies and partners with a variety of organizations to formulate joint special projects which would enhance the delivery of existing education programs and services to students. Develops a communication strategy for public awareness of educational programs and events. Acts as a community liaison and represents the organization at community activities and events. Manages databases for all educational programs.Human Resources and Administration: Oversees and supervises all program staff; coordinates and participates in the recruitment of staff. Responsible for the orientation, performance review and development of staff. Manages team performance by setting expectations and regularly reviews performance with staff; acts as coach and mentor to address performance issues; and consults with the Band Administrator when progressive disciplinary actions are required. Ensures employee compliance with Band policies and procedures. Coordinates and leads staff department meetings, setting the agenda, providing minutes and clear communication of Band information. Keeps the Chief and Council informed of sensitive and important issues and events. Assists in identifying maintenance needs for Education facilitiesFinance / Reporting: Ensures all education funds are authorized and properly accounted for as per the budget. Prepares and monitors budgets; provides appropriate funding to eligible students and tracks payments. Ensures regular reporting to appropriate agencies, most importantly completing financial reporting for respective government funding bodies. Prepares budgets, as required. Writes proposals to secure funding or develop programs.May 5, 2021 Senior Education Manager page 1 of 2 Manages the preparation and submission of program reports, recommendations for program improvements and program evaluations. Other duties as assigned or required.The duties listed are provided as examples of area of responsibility and are not intended to create limits to responsibility but to help understand the scope of the position. All staff are expected to be team oriented and maintain confidentiality of all information gained while working with the organization.QualificationsEducation:• Degree or Diploma in Education or Business Administration or related studies Master Degree in Education is an asset.• Experience working with First Nation communities and understanding the educational importance of language and culture in a school environment is an asset.Experience:• Three to five years teaching experience with some management experience.• Experience supervising and managing staff• Experience working with First Nation communities and understanding the educational importance of language and culture in a school environment is an asset.• Experience in the development of curriculum, proposals for funding, program assessment, and financial management is an asset.• Experience related to land based learning and curriculum is an asset.Skills and Abilities:• Ability to work independently and build effective interpersonal relationships.• Ability to organize, prioritize and manage concurrent projects and deadlines.• Understanding of legislation on Labour Code, Occupational Health and Safety, Privacy and the Human Rights Code.• Proficiency in the use of computer programs for word processing, databases, spreadsheets, email and the internet, to the intermediate level (capable of using a large number of functions and feel confident using the program).• Demonstrated knowledge of Education Programs, government and school regulations.• Understanding of First Nations needs, issues and concerns.Competencies:The Senior Education Manager should demonstrate competence in some or all of the following:• Relationship Building – Develops strong, cooperative relationships with internal and external partners, customers, clients and colleagues to build long term relationships that foster collaboration and partnership.• Coaching – Facilitates the ongoing development of individuals through coaching, mentoring, knowledge sharing and performance management that fosters their long-term learning and growth.• Leadership & Teambuilding – Sets an example and a direction for others by acting as a role model and inspiring a positive attitude toward work, motivating others toward vision and goal achievement. The population of our two communities suffered a dramatic decline in the late 19th century, largely due to a smallpox epidemic in 1863-1864. The population of Dog Creek was reduced from more than two hundred members in the 1850s to a mere 20 members by the late 1860s.Our two lower Fraser River bands joined together in the late nineteenth century and were then referred to as Canoe Creek Band by the Department of Indian Affairs.We honour our separate histories and our coming together.There are currently 745 registered members in this Secwepemc nation, with a shared vision of becoming an economically and politically self-sustaining community living Secwepemc culture, language and traditions in a healthy and safe environment.
